An individual profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the period preceding former President Trump announced on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436K from a starting bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Market statistics shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the first hours of Saturday, pointing to a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.

A small number of other individuals also profited tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Emerges

Elected officials are growing concerned.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a wager.

Market Background

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with participants able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting arena.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
