Crew Member Discloses Depression After Deluge of Backlash Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of space.

The team of pioneers also included experts in various fields.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
