Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People buying these drugs need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
