The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
